The answer

Does Miller & Carter serve halal meat?

No. Miller & Carter does not serve halal meat, and no dish on its menus is prepared or cooked to a halal standard.

This comes from the brand's own FAQ page, under the question "Is the Meat Halal Certified?". There is no halal menu, no halal steak and no halal chicken option at any of the 129 UK restaurants.

Some forum and social posts say individual staff told them otherwise. Those are not official answers. The brand's written statement is the one to rely on.

In their words

What exactly does Miller & Carter say about halal?

Its FAQ says all suppliers stun animals before slaughter, and that none of its meals are prepared or cooked to a halal standard.

The full statement, word for word: "When we source our meat, our decisions are based on strict animal welfare, food safety and quality standards. We use a variety of suppliers, mostly in the UK and Ireland, but some from abroad. All of our suppliers, regardless of location, operate to strict EU animal welfare standards, which require that all animals are stunned before slaughter to ensure they are killed humanely. This is the industry standard used by all the major retailers and restaurants in the UK. None of the meals on our menus are prepared or cooked to a Halal standard."

Good to know

Does Miller & Carter serve pork and cook with alcohol?

Yes. Pork dishes are on the menu, and several sauces and dishes are marked as containing alcohol.

Pork appears on the à la carte and set menus, for example soy and mirin pork belly, the pork tomahawk on the lunch menu and bacon in a lettuce wedge dressing. The menus mark dishes that contain alcohol with an asterisk, including the rich red wine, three peppercorn and Café de Paris steak sauces.

Kitchens handle all of these alongside every other dish, so there is no separate halal preparation area.

Sourcing

Where does Miller & Carter's beef come from?

Mostly from Red Tractor and Bord Bia assured farms in the UK and Ireland, aged for at least 30 days.

The brand says it sources 100% of its British beef from Red Tractor and Bord Bia assured farms, naming Aberdeen Angus and Hereford breeds. A separate 50 day aged Angus range is "sourced from around the world". None of it is halal. See the Miller & Carter steak menu for every cut and price.

Options

What can you eat at Miller & Carter if you only eat halal?

Nothing is halal, so the closest choices are the vegetarian and vegan dishes, which contain no meat at all.

Meat-free dishes include the Sunshine Plant Burger (vegan), a squash risotto, a feta and watermelon salad, and vegan sides like the onion loaf, triple-cooked chips and chargrilled vegetables. The brand notes that preparation and cooking methods could affect vegetarian and vegan dishes, so they are cooked in the same kitchens as meat.
